Given the growing complexities in the practice of medicine, Infectious Disease specialists have been called upon to educate their colleagues on such issues as antibiotic usage and resistance, new microbial agents, emerging diseases, bioterrorism, and when should an infectious disease specialist be consulted.
To facilitate the education of the medical community to infectious disease-related issues, IDAC has established a Continuing Medical Education program, in which IDAC members are available for speaking engagements. This directory lists IDAC members available to speak and their presentation topics.
IDAC will forward inquiries by medical organizations to our members. Honorariums and expenses will be negotiated with each speaker, based on availability, group, and location. IDAC can also provide Category 1 CME units for attending physicians for a service fee.

- Changing Patterns in the Neuropathogenesis of HIV during the HAART Era
Review of changes in the frequency and severity of HIV encephalitis, opportunistic infections and neoplasms in the CNS of AIDS patients prior to and during HAART availability. Drug delivery, viral compartmentalization and implications toward HIV-associated dementia will also be discussed. Attendees will learn how HAART has (1) changed the profile and frequency of opportunistic infections in AIDS patients, (2) improved the longevity in HIV patients and implications for progression of CNS disease, and (3) contributed to compartmentalization and independent viral evolution in the brain.
- Current Views on the Neuropathogenesis of HIV in Methamphetamine Users
Review patterns of selective damage to neurons, endothelial cells and other CNS components in HIV positive methamphetamine users. Mechanisms responsible for synergy between methamphetamine and HIV proteins to cause cell dysfunction and death will be addressed. Attendees will learn how (1) methamphetamine and HIV proteins may synergize to damage neurons and endothelial cells of the blood brain barrier, (2) protease inhibitors may contribute to methamphetamine toxicity in HIV patients, (3) methamphetamine and HIV may impact cognition and CNS disease progression.
- Crosstalk among Components of the Blood Brain Barrier, Cells of the CNS and HIV
Review how HIV proteins mimic host cell signaling factors to gain access into the brain. Mechanisms by which HIV and HIV-mediated inflammatory factors dysregulate host cell growth factor signaling will be discussed. The contribution of anti-retroviral drugs to decreased host cell fitness to alteration in host defense mechanisms will also be addressed. Attendees will learn how (1) endothelial cells of the blood brain barrier communicate with astrocytes for protection from HIV proteins, (2) HIV proteins mimic host ligands to alter receptor-mediated signaling to promote infection, and (3) anti-retrovirals used to treat HIV may impact host defense mechanisms against HIV at the blood brain barrier.
